Know your versions
The 1994 original carried a supercharged 3.2-litre straight six on underpinnings with Jaguar ancestry, styled by Ian Callum into one of the nineties' best-looking cars. The V12-engined Vantage arrived in 1999 with 420bhp and the majority of production; the run-out GT and GTA of 2002–03 are the collector picks, sharpened and scarce. Volante convertibles carry a modest premium over coupés in both engines; manual gearboxes carry a larger one, especially on the V12.
What to pay
£8,000 to £11,000 buys higher-mileage sixes and early V12s where the file does the talking. £12,000 to £16,000, around our median, buys honest V12 Vantages with history. £17,000 to £19,000, our upper band, buys the best standard cars; GT/GTA and exceptional manuals trade above our range nationally and are worth the stretch when genuine.
What goes wrong
The Jaguar-derived electronics and switchgear fail in Jaguar ways and cost Jaguar money, which is the pleasant surprise of DB7 ownership. The unpleasant ones: sills and rear arches rust (early cars especially), headlinings sag, and the V12 wants evidence of regular coolant and oil service since overheating history is its one genuine enemy. Six-cylinder cars add supercharger service items. Body panels are the expensive scarcity, so crash history matters more than mileage. A marque or Jaguar-Aston specialist history file is worth £2,000 of anyone's money.
Our view
The DB7 V12 Vantage at £12,000 to £15,000 remains the best value glamour in our entire dataset: a hand-finished, V12 Aston Martin for hot-hatch money, with the six-cylinder car the connoisseur's alternative on rarity and lightness. Buy on structure and file, prefer the manual if it surfaces, and enjoy owning the car that saved the company for less than it costs to option a new one's paint.
