Aston Martin V8 Buyer's Guide
Three tracked sales of the 1969–89 V8, £33,750 to £158,000, median £109,125, and no live lots as we write: when these cars come to market they find their buyer and leave. The spread is nearly five to one, and it is the condition-and-provenance spread of a genuine collector market. These are handbuilt cars, each aluminium body formed by hand at Newport Pagnell, and no two are quite alike; the history file is what tells you which one you are actually buying.
What to pay
£33,750, our floor, buys the cars needing everything, and on a handbuilt aluminium Aston "everything" is a six-figure restoration; the arithmetic only works for the buyer restoring for love. Around £109,125, our median, buys the sound, usable examples with continuous history, which is where the sensible money goes. £158,000, our ceiling, buys the best: original, documented, specialist-maintained cars, and the long appreciation of this market suggests the ceiling is a moving target.
What goes wrong
The aluminium body over a steel frame is the first inspection: the panels themselves resist rot but the underlying steel structure and sills corrode, and handformed aluminium is expensive to repair well. The V8 engine is strong when maintained, but the fuelling is specialist work whichever form it takes: the Weber carburettor setups demand experienced tuning and the earlier injection systems demand rarer expertise still. Budget for marque-specialist servicing or do not budget at all. Every pound of a car's value lives in its file: engine numbers, build records, invoices, continuity of ownership.
Our view
Buy the history file first and the car attached to it second, through a marque specialist in both directions. These have been appreciating for years because the supply is fixed and the craftsmanship is unrepeatable, and a median-money car with unbroken provenance is the blue-chip position. The cheap one is only cheap until the first bodywork estimate.
