Audi TT Buyer's Guide
Three tracked TT sales, £2,000 to £3,700, median £2,700, with two more live as we write. The cars in question are the Mk1, the Bauhaus-influenced coupé that landed in the late 1990s looking like nothing else on the road and still does. The figures say the market has not yet re-rated it: a genuine design landmark is trading at the price of the Golf it shares its mechanicals with, and design landmarks do not usually stay at Golf money.
What to pay
£2,000, our floor, buys high-mileage cars, usually modified, usually with patchy files; at this money the TT is a used car and priced as one. £2,700, our median, buys the straight, standard examples with history, and standard is the operative word. £3,700, our ceiling, buys the best of the current cohort: low owners, unmodified, documented. The entire recorded spread is £1,700, so condition and originality cost almost nothing extra to buy; that is not a market that has finished thinking.
What goes wrong
The Golf-shared mechanicals are the good news: the turbocharged four-cylinder engines and running gear are thoroughly understood, parts are cheap and everywhere, and any competent garage can service one. The known items are dashboard instrument-cluster failure (a recognised Mk1 fault with established repairers), coil packs and the usual age-related suspension refresh. The real scarcity is not mechanical at all: unmodified cars are the rare ones, because two decades of cheap ownership put big wheels and loud exhausts on most of them.
Our view
Buy the most original Mk1 available and pay the small premium our ceiling represents without hesitation. The mechanicals are a solved problem; originality is the only thing that cannot be bought back later. At £2,700 for a median car this is an inexpensive position in a shape the design museums already rate, and the market will get there eventually.
