Bentley S-Series Buyer's Guide

Three tracked S-Series sales, £1,750 to £7,875, median £2,400, none live as we write. Be plain about what that record is: our cohort was project-grade, cars sold as restoration prospects rather than runners, and these figures describe that end of the market only. Nationally, sound and restored S-Series cars trade at many multiples of anything in our data. What our numbers really price is the distance between a barn find and a Bentley.

What to pay

£1,750 to our £2,400 median bought cars needing everything: storage casualties, incomplete restorations, and lots where the value was the chassis plate and the possibility. The £7,875 ceiling bought the most complete and least deteriorated of the three, still a project by any honest definition. Set against restoration costs, every figure here is a deposit, not a price; the real spend starts after the hammer.

What goes wrong

At this grade, everything already has. The body and chassis rot in sills, floors, wings and outriggers, and coachwork repair on a car this size is priced accordingly. Interiors are the quiet ruin: retrimming acres of leather, veneer and headlining costs more than our entire price range several times over. The mechanical side is the good news; the engines and running gear are understood, durable, and supported by long-established Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists and clubs, with parts availability that shames most fifties cars.

Our view

An S-Series project only makes sense as a labour of love or with a restoration budget that treats our figures as loose change. The rational route is to let someone else lose the money first and buy their finished car on the national market. But for the buyer with patience, skills and dry storage, this remains the cheapest ticket into genuine fifties Bentley ownership, and the support network will meet you halfway.

About Bentley

28 sold results led by modern Continentals at a £17,250 median: the steepest luxury depreciation at auction, and the Arnage at £14,500 is the boldest bet in it.
