Ferrari 488 Buyer's Guide
The 488 brought turbocharging back to Ferrari's mid-engined V8 for the first time since the F40, and the market treats its variants as different cars. Our one sale is the exception that makes the point: a 575-mile 2020 488 Pista Piloti, the version offered to Ferrari's racing customers, sold for £489,167. Standard GTBs and Spiders are estimated at £100,000–250,000; Pistas at £250,000–500,000.
Know your versions
The 488 GTB of 2015 used a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 670PS through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the 488 Spider with a folding hard top followed the same year. The 488 Pista of 2018 added 720PS, lighter components and aerodynamics from the Challenge racer, and the Pista Spider followed. The Pista Piloti is a Pista with a racing-inspired livery and specification for Ferrari's customer racers. The F8 Tributo replaced the GTB in 2019.
What to pay
One sale: £489,167 for the Pista Piloti. Estimates set the rest: GTBs at £150,000–250,000, Spiders at £100,000–150,000 and £150,000–250,000, a Pista at £250,000–500,000, and a Pista Spider offered at £369,673. On our evidence, a standard GTB or Spider is a six-figure car with £100,000–200,000 as the working range, and the Pista models are a separate collector market.
What goes wrong
The 488 is young enough that its condition is about use and history rather than age. Look for main-dealer or specialist servicing on schedule, the remaining factory maintenance and any extended warranty, paint protection film and the state of the paint beneath it, kerbed wheels and front-splitter damage. Carbon-ceramic brakes are expensive if worn. Tailor Made and carbon options add value only when the buyer wants them, so price the car, not the option list.
Our view
The GTB and Spider are superb modern Ferraris at prices well below new, and the turbo V8 is proven. Buy on history and warranty, choose the body by preference, and treat the Pista family as a collector purchase where originality and mileage are everything, as our £489,167 result shows.
