Ferrari F430 Buyer's Guide

The F430 kept the 360's shape and gave it a new engine, an electronic differential and the manettino switch that every Ferrari since has carried. Our single sale, a 2009 F430 Spider F1 once owned by Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, made £65,250. Around it, F1 coupés and Spiders are estimated at £50,000–150,000, while the manual cars, scarce from new, are estimated at £150,000–250,000.

Know your versions

The F430 coupé arrived in 2004 with a 4.3-litre, 490bhp V8 and either a six-speed manual or the F1 paddle-shift, which most buyers chose. The Spider followed in 2005. The 430 Scuderia of 2007 is the lightened, 510bhp version with faster shifts, and the 16M Scuderia Spider its limited open sister; F430 Challenge cars are the one-make racers. Production ended in 2009.

What to pay

One sale: £65,250 for the 2009 Spider F1. Estimates fill out the picture: F1 coupés at £50,000–75,000, £75,000–100,000 and £100,000–150,000; F1 Spiders mostly at £75,000–100,000 and £100,000–150,000; manual coupés at £150,000–250,000. On our evidence, £65,000–90,000 buys a good F1 car, coupé or Spider, and the manual is a separate, collector-led market.

What goes wrong

Unlike the 360, the F430's engine uses timing chains rather than belts, which takes the biggest routine bill off the table. The known faults are elsewhere: exhaust manifolds cracked on early cars (many were replaced), F1 hydraulic pumps fail, and F1 clutch wear should be checked with a diagnostic reading. The interior suffers the period's sticky trim. Carbon-ceramic brakes, where fitted, are expensive to replace, so check disc condition.

Our view

The F430 is the best-sorted of the older mid-engined V8 Ferraris and, on our £65,250 evidence, attainable. Buy an F1 car with clean diagnostics and a full history, coupé or Spider to taste; pay the manual premium only if the gearbox is the point of the car for you, because the market will make you pay it.
