Land Rover Defender Buyer's Guide
Ten tracked Defender sales, £8,970 to £67,500, median £22,850, spanning build years from 1989 to the 2015 run-out: the classic Defender market matured the moment production ended and has held its shape since. Twenty-three more are live on the site as we write, the deepest 4x4 inventory we track.

The name arrived in 1990 (the coil-sprung Ninety and One Ten of 1983 are the same machine before the badge), and the mechanical eras matter more than the years: 200Tdi and 300Tdi diesels (to 1998) are the mechanically simple, hand-tool-serviceable pick; the five-cylinder Td5 (1998–2007) adds electronics and character; the Ford-era 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi cars (2007–16) are the most refined and the most valued, with late Heritage and Adventure editions leading. Ninety-inch wheelbase carries the lifestyle premium; One Ten and 130 do the work.
What to pay
£9,000 to £15,000 buys honest working Tdis and early Td5s. £18,000 to £28,000, around our median, buys tidy Td5s and early TDCis. £30,000 to £67,500 covers late cars, low miles, special editions and professional galvanised-chassis rebuilds, which our top result reflects. A documented galvanised chassis adds real money and deserves to.
What goes wrong
Chassis rot: rear crossmember, outriggers and rails, hidden by underseal and priced by welders. Bulkhead corrosion at the footwells and door pillars runs it close. Both are fully repairable and complete new galvanised chassis exist, but a swap is a five-figure job all-in, which is why buying one already done is economy. Engines are long-lived (Tdi nearly immortal, Td5 wants its oil-in-loom check, TDCi its dual-mass flywheel), doors rot from inside, and theft remains a genuine ownership consideration: check the security history as well as the service one.
Our view
A 300Tdi 90 on a solid or replaced chassis at £14,000 to £20,000 is the keeper's Defender: simple enough to own forever, supported by the best parts network in the hobby, and holding value with the certainty of farmland. Pay the galvanised premium, verify the chassis number matches the paperwork, and fit the tracker before the first night outside.
