Land Rover Series II Buyer's Guide

Three tracked Series II and IIA sales, £3,820 to £14,950, median £11,250, with seven more live as we write: the strongest live count in our Land Rover records. The Series II is the working end of the classic Series market. It lacks the Series I's collector premium, which is precisely the point: this is the Series Land Rover bought to be driven, greenlaned and fixed on the driveway, and the trade in them is correspondingly busy.

What to pay

£3,820 to £7,000 buys running projects and tired working trucks, where the chassis decides whether the price is a bargain or a deposit on a welder. Around our £11,250 median sits the sorted, usable example: solid chassis, honest bulkhead, no urgent structural work. Our £14,950 ceiling buys restored or exceptionally original trucks, and with seven live lots the buyer can afford to wait for the right one rather than fund somebody else's optimism.

What goes wrong

Chassis and bulkhead rot, as with every leaf-sprung Land Rover: rear crossmember, outriggers and footwells first. The saving grace is that galvanised replacement chassis are standard practice in this market, not exotica, so a rebodied or rechassised truck is a normal proposition rather than a red flag, provided the paperwork is honest. Everything else is hand-tool serviceable: the petrol and diesel engines are simple, the drivetrain is agricultural in the complimentary sense, and parts supply is complete down to the smallest bracket.

Our view

The Series II is the sensible way into Series ownership: most of the character of a Series I, a fraction of the collector tax, and the whole vehicle serviceable with a socket set and patience. Buy the best chassis available, regard a documented galvanised replacement as an asset, and expect the truck to outlast your interest in it. Few classics are this hard to kill.
