Mercedes-Benz CLK Buyer's Guide
Eleven tracked CLK sales carry the widest single-model spread in our records: £500 to £193,500. Remove the one exceptional AMG result and the picture is honest and modest: pillarless-look coupé style over E-Class-adjacent mechanicals at a £2,725 median.
Know your generations
C208 (1997–2002). Eight sales, £500 to £8,140, median £2,036. The first CLK, elegant in a way Mercedes has struggled to repeat, now trading at the very bottom of the classic-eligible market. Convertibles carry a small premium; the supercharged 230K and the 320 V6 are the sensible engines, the 430 V8 the interesting one.
C209 (2002–09). Three sales: £2,725, £26,458 and £193,500. The middle result is serious AMG money; the top is a single exceptional AMG variant, the kind of limited-production car that behaves as a collectible regardless of its family. Ordinary C209s trade alongside their C208 elders.
What to pay
£1,500 to £3,500 buys tidy standard cars of either generation around our median. £5,000 to £9,000 buys the best V8 coupés and convertibles. AMG versions start in the mid-teens and, as our results demonstrate, the rare ones no longer obey used-car logic at all.
What goes wrong
C208s share the W210 era's corrosion: front wings, arches, bootlids and around the number plate lights, and it decides more purchases than anything mechanical. Engines (four, six and V8 alike) are long-lived with oil changes; automatic gearboxes want documented fluid services despite what the era's marketing claimed. Convertible roofs and their hydraulics age like any others. C209s rust less and compute more; electronics lead their fault list. Parts are E-Class plentiful.
Our view
A rust-checked C208 320 or 430 at £2,500 to £5,000 is the most elegant cheap Mercedes of its era, and elegance is the asset the market eventually reprices; the W124 coupés walked this exact path a decade ago. Buy on wings and arches, prefer originality, and let the AMG stratosphere entertain rather than tempt: the £193,500 in our ledger bought rarity, not a better CLK.
