Mercedes-Benz E-Class Buyer's Guide
Nine tracked E-Class sales split precisely along the line every Mercedes enthusiast already knows: one W124 at £5,940 leading the board, and eight later cars (W210, W211, W212) between £1,300 and £4,300. The market has decided which E-Class is the classic, and our data agrees.
Know your generations
W124 (1984–95). One sale at £5,940, top of our range. The last of the over-engineered Mercedes saloons, built to the old standard and increasingly priced like it: good saloons nationally now trade above our result, estates above that, and the sporting versions (500E, E36 AMG) in another market entirely.
W210 (1995–2002). Three sales, median £3,200. The four-eyed car that introduced the corrosion era; survivors this far in are the pre-selected ones, but inspect everything anyway.
W211 (2002–09). Four sales, median £2,104. Better car, better rustproofing, SBC brake-unit era on early cars; the £1,300 entry point is where deferred maintenance lives.
W212 (2009–16). One sale at £1,900. Still depreciating transport.
What to pay
£1,500 to £3,500 covers usable W210s and W211s around our medians, bought on history rather than hope. £5,000 to £9,000 buys honest W124s in line with and above our single result, and that is where the classic money belongs. Estates, manuals and big engines all add; rot subtracts faster than any of them add.
What goes wrong
W124: little beyond age and the front-wing rust of its final years; mechanically these run to half a million miles with fluid changes, and the parts supply is exemplary. W210: corrosion in wings, arches, doors, subframes and everywhere else the warranty once covered; buy the shell, not the car. W211: early SBC brakes and air suspension where fitted; post-2006 cars are the safer pick. Diesels of every generation outlast their bodies.
Our view
The W124 is the only E-Class here with a future as well as a past: buy the best 280E or E320 you can find at £5,000 to £9,000 and it will outlive most things on this site. Among the moderns, a late W211 at £3,000 is superb transport priced as a risk; take it on those terms and service it as the Mercedes it still is.
