2004 Porsche 911 (996) Turbo

The 996 Turbo (2000-2005) represented a quantum leap in usability. The twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre engine produced 420hp with all-wheel drive providing exceptional traction. Unlike the terrifying 930 and 993 Turbos, the 996 Turbo was remarkably accessible while still devastatingly fast. The Mezger engine (shared with GT cars) proved bulletproof. Now appreciating as the era's best performance bargain.

Engine: Mezger engine extremely reliable. Check for oil leaks but not subject to M96 IMS failure. Turbos: Should boost evenly. Check wastegates. Coolant system: Radiators and lines age. Transmission: Tiptronic can have valve body issues. Manual robust. AWD: Transfer case can leak. Suspension: Air suspension (if equipped) expensive. Brakes: Large discs expensive. PCCB if fitted very expensive. Body: Check for parking damage (wide car). Wheel corrosion on some.
