The R230 SL500 (2001-2011) debuted the innovative folding metal roof and ABC active suspension. The M113 5.0-litre V8 produced 306hp initially, with the later M273 delivering 388hp. This was the volume seller, offering the ideal balance of performance and refinement. The retractable hardtop eliminated the compromises of soft-top ownership while maintaining classic roadster proportions. ABC suspension provided remarkable body control and adjustable ride height, though maintenance costs could be significant.

ABC Active Body Control suspension is expensive - expect £2000+ for shock replacement, struts £800+ each. SBC brake system needs battery for operation - can strand car if battery fails. Vario-Roof hydraulic system complex with multiple failure points. M113/M273 generally reliable but coil packs fail. Conductor plate in gearbox causes shifting issues.
