About the Excel

The Lotus Excel (1982-1992) was the final evolution of the Elite/Eclat series. Toyota gearbox improved reliability significantly. 2.2-litre engine with 160-180hp. Around 1,300 built over 10 years. The most usable of the series and excellent value.

Known Issues to Watch For

Toyota gearbox transforms reliability - the key improvement over earlier cars. Engine: 912 - cam belt, head gasket, water pump. Chassis: Galvanised backbone still needs checking. Pop-up headlights. Most reliable of Elite/Eclat/Excel series. Budget £3-4k annually.
