The R231 SL500 (2012-2020) paired the new lightweight body with the M278 bi-turbo 4.7-litre V8 producing 435hp initially, later 455hp. The aluminium structure transformed handling, making this the most dynamic SL500 yet. Cylinder deactivation improved economy during cruising. Interior quality and technology represented a significant advance, with a leather-lined cabin featuring twin displays. ABC suspension optional, providing remarkable body control and comfort.
M278 bi-turbo V8 has higher oil consumption than predecessor - check level regularly. Timing chain tensioner failures possible on high-mileage cars. ABC suspension expensive to maintain - struts £1500+ each. Retractable roof needs regular exercise and seal conditioning. COMAND system freezes. Front brake wear higher due to weight distribution. Auxiliary water pump failures. Complex electrics need careful fault diagnosis.
ABC Active Body Control (highly recommended), Magic Sky Control, AMG Line, Burmester 3D surround sound, Driving Assistance Package Plus, designo exclusive leather, IWC analogue clock, carbon fibre trim, AMG 19" or 20" wheels, night vision assist, head-up display.
