1984 Mercedes-Benz SL500

The R107 500 SL (1980-1989) used the M117 5.0-litre V8 with 240hp. The ultimate R107 engine offered effortless performance. Later 500 SLs with the updated interior (1985+) are most desirable. The flagship R107 and values reflect this.

Engine: M110 six reliable. M116/M117 V8s robust but check for timing chain wear on high mileage. Oil leaks common. Transmission: Auto most common - 722.3/722.4 generally reliable. Manual rare. Suspension: Subframe mounts can rust. Ball joints. SLS if fitted expensive. Body: Rust is critical - check floors, sills, inner wings, boot floor, around hardtop mounts, windscreen surrounds. Soft top: Frame and fabric condition. Hardtop: Verify present and matching (significant value). A/C: R12 system needs conversion. Electrics: Generally simple. Climate control vacuum system. Heater valve.
