1972 TRIUMPH GT6 MK III The Triumph GT6 MkIII, produced between 1970 and 1973, is the final and most refined version of what was known as the 'Poor Man's E-Type'. It features a distinctive fastback body designed by Giovanni Michelotti and is powered by a smooth 2.0-litre straight-six engine. The Triumph GT6 Mk3 (1970-1973) had restyled tail (as Spitfire MkIV), 104hp. Around 13,000 built. Final GT6. Values from £16k.
GT6: Engine: 2.0 straight-six from Vitesse/2000 - smooth, lovely sound. Timing chain, oil leaks, water pump. Carburettors: Twin Strombergs need setup. Gearbox: 4-speed, overdrive essential. Rear suspension: Mk1 swing-axle is DANGEROUS - more power than Spitfire makes it worse. Mk2+ has lower wishbone - much safer but still tricky. Chassis: Backbone as Spitfire but strengthened. Check thoroughly. Body: Steel fastback - same rust areas as Spitfire plus rear hatch seal/surround. Overheating: Can run hot - check cooling. Values: Rising - attractive usable classic. Mk2 best balance. Budget £2-3k annually.
GT6 Mk2 (best handling), Spitfire Mk3 (best early), Overdrive, Hard top, Wire wheels
