1992 Porsche 911 (964) Turbo 3.3

The 964 Turbo (1991-1994) evolved the 930 Turbo formula with improved chassis dynamics and increased power. The 3.3-litre turbocharged engine produced 320hp, later increased to 360hp with the 3.6-litre version (1993+). Unlike its successor, the 964 Turbo retained rear-wheel drive, maintaining the exciting (some would say terrifying) handling characteristics that made the 930 legendary. The wide body, tea-tray rear wing, and extended arches gave it unmistakable presence. The 964 chassis improvements - coil springs, power steering, ABS - made it significantly more accessible than the 930 while retaining the analogue thrills. The 3.6-litre version is particularly sought after for its improved response and additional power. These cars represent outstanding value compared to the later 993 Turbo.

Engine: K27 turbocharger can develop shaft play. Boost pipes and intercooler hoses perish. Wastegate frequency valve. Check for smoking on startup (turbo seals) and on overrun (valve guides). 3.6 engine more reliable than 3.3. Transmission: G50/52 gearbox strong. Check clutch carefully - heavy and expensive. Suspension: Sport suspension very stiff. Rear semi-trailing arm bushings. Front wishbone bushings. Brakes: 4-piston fronts excellent but pads and discs expensive. Body: Stone chips on arches. Check for kerbing on wide rear wheels. Verify not a 930 or C2 with Turbo body.
