About the Elise
The Lotus Elise (1996-2021) revolutionised the lightweight sports car. Bonded aluminium chassis, mid-engine layout, and minimal weight (under 700kg) delivered extraordinary handling. Various Rover and Toyota engines (118-243hp). Around 35,000 built across three series. The modern classic Lotus.
Known Issues to Watch For
Chassis: Bonded aluminium - check for crash damage (expensive to repair), corrosion at mounting points. Engine: K-series (early) - head gasket failure common. Toyota (later) - very reliable. Gearbox: Rover PG1 or Toyota C64 - both adequate. Budget £2-4k annually.
