The 12C Spider added open-air motoring to McLaren's first supercar with minimal compromise. The retractable hardtop folded in just 17 seconds at speeds up to 19mph. Remarkably, the Spider weighed only 40kg more than the coupe and retained the same chassis stiffness thanks to the inherent strength of the MonoCell carbon tub. Performance was essentially identical to the coupe. The Spider proved that McLaren's engineering philosophy could deliver a convertible without the traditional penalties, setting a template for all subsequent McLaren Spiders.
All 12C coupe issues apply, plus: Roof mechanism: Check operation is smooth and complete. Seals can leak if not maintained. Rear glass occasionally mists. Storage: Less luggage space than coupe. Window operation: Can be slow in cold weather. Note: Convertible top mechanism actually quite reliable - less complex than competitors.
All 12C options apply, plus: Wind deflector essential for open-top driving at speed, Electrochromic roof (tint on demand), Hardtop storage cover
