The Land Rover Series I (1948-1958) started it all. Designed by Maurice Wilks as a utility vehicle, the aluminium-bodied 4x4 became a legend. 1.6-litre then 2.0-litre petrol engines. 80", 86", 88", and 107" wheelbases. Around 200,000 built. Blue-chip classic. Values from £15k (project) to £80k+ (concours 80").
Series Land Rover: Chassis - galvanised steel but rust is endemic. Check outriggers, crossmembers, spring hangers, bulkhead mounts. Bulkhead footwells rust badly. Engine 2.25 petrol/diesel simple and reliable. Oil leaks expected. Gearbox crash box (I/II) or synchro (IIA onwards). Aluminium body doesn't rust but check for electrolytic corrosion. Budget £2-5k annually.
Series I 80" (most valuable), Good chassis, Galvanised chassis, Matching numbers, Station Wagon body
