1987 BMW (E30) M3

The E30 M3 (1986-1991) is the car that established BMW's M division as a producer of legendary driver's cars. Built for Group A touring car homologation, the M3 featured the remarkable S14 four-cylinder engine - a high-revving, 2.3-litre unit producing 200hp in standard form (later 215hp, and up to 238hp in Evolution models). The widened bodywork, with its distinctive box flares and aggressive rear spoiler, was functional as well as dramatic. The chassis was stiffened and lowered, with upgraded brakes and a limited-slip differential. On track, the E30 M3 dominated touring car racing for years. On the road, it delivered an analogue driving experience that remains benchmarks today. Values have risen dramatically, with Evolution models now commanding £100k+. Even standard cars are £40k+ for good examples.

Engine: S14 chain-driven and reliable but timing chain tensioner can fail with age. Check oil pressure. Head gasket can fail. Valve adjustment needed every 15k miles. Transmission: Getrag 265 dogleg gearbox robust. Check synchros (2nd and 3rd). Limited slip diff can wear. Suspension: Standard setup undersprung for track use. Check all bushings. Rear semi-trailing arm bearings. Brakes: Adequate for road but many upgraded for track. ABS system can be problematic. Body: RUST IS CRITICAL. Check inner wings, strut towers, sills, rear arches, floor pans, rear shock mounts. Many rust-free cars imported from Japan or South Africa. Verify authenticity - many conversions exist.
