The R107 380 SL (1980-1985) used the M116 3.8-litre V8 with 218hp. Popular in the US market, the 380 SL addressed emissions requirements while maintaining performance. Check specification carefully as US and European versions differ.
Engine: M110 six reliable. M116/M117 V8s robust but check for timing chain wear on high mileage. Oil leaks common. Transmission: Auto most common - 722.3/722.4 generally reliable. Manual rare. Suspension: Subframe mounts can rust. Ball joints. SLS if fitted expensive. Body: Rust is critical - check floors, sills, inner wings, boot floor, around hardtop mounts, windscreen surrounds. Soft top: Frame and fabric condition. Hardtop: Verify present and matching (significant value). A/C: R12 system needs conversion. Electrics: Generally simple. Climate control vacuum system. Heater valve.
Manual gearbox (very rare, significant premium), Both tops present and matching, Air conditioning (most have), ABS (late cars), Rear seats, Full leather, European specification, Documented service history, Rust-free example
