The 993 represents the final evolution of the air-cooled 911, produced from 1994 to 1998. Widely considered the most refined air-cooled 911, it combined classic 911 character with genuinely usable everyday dynamics. The 3.6-litre flat-six produced 272hp in base Carrera form, mated to either a 6-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic. The 993 introduced a new multi-link rear suspension that finally tamed the classic 911 handling quirks, making it more accessible without losing the essential 911 experience. Build quality was exceptional, and the design by Tony Hatter remains timeless. As the last air-cooled generation, 993s have seen significant value appreciation, with clean examples now commanding strong premiums.
Engine: Generally bulletproof but check for oil leaks around cam covers and chain tensioners. Cylinder head studs can pull on high-mileage cars. IMS bearing not a concern (air-cooled). Transmission: 6-speed manual robust but synchros can wear. Tiptronic valve body can fail. Suspension: Rear multi-link bushings wear and are expensive to replace. Front control arm bushings. Brakes: Check for warped discs - common on cars with infrequent use. Electrical: Central locking pump failures. Window regulators. Alarm systems can be problematic. Body: Check for stone chips on front bumper and rear arches. Rust rare but check battery box area and front wings. Roof seal can leak on Targa.
