The 996 Carrera (1998-2004) was the first water-cooled 911, representing Porsche's most significant engineering change since 1963. The M96 3.4-litre engine (later 3.6-litre) offered more power and refinement than the air-cooled cars. While initially controversial among purists, the 996 is now appreciated on its own merits. Values have risen as the 996's driving qualities and relative affordability attract enthusiasts.
Engine: IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing failure is the known 996 issue - can cause catastrophic engine damage. Single-row bearing (1999-2000) higher risk; dual-row (2000-2005) better but not immune. IMS bearing replacement recommended. RMS (Rear Main Seal) leaks common. Bore scoring on some engines. Transmission: G96 6-speed generally reliable. Tiptronic can have issues. Cooling: Radiators crack. Expansion tanks fail. Electrics: Window regulators. PCM failures. Suspension: Control arm bushings. Brakes: Standard discs adequate. Body: Generally solid but check for accident damage.
IMS bearing upgraded, PSE Sport Exhaust, Sport Chrono, Sport seats, PCCB (rare), Manual gearbox, Full service history, Known IMS status
