The R107 300 SL (1985-1989) replaced the 280 SL with a 3.0-litre M103 single-cam six (188hp). More torque than the 280 SL improved drivability. The 300 SL is a practical choice for regular use.
Engine: M110 six reliable. M116/M117 V8s robust but check for timing chain wear on high mileage. Oil leaks common. Transmission: Auto most common - 722.3/722.4 generally reliable. Manual rare. Suspension: Subframe mounts can rust. Ball joints. SLS if fitted expensive. Body: Rust is critical - check floors, sills, inner wings, boot floor, around hardtop mounts, windscreen surrounds. Soft top: Frame and fabric condition. Hardtop: Verify present and matching (significant value). A/C: R12 system needs conversion. Electrics: Generally simple. Climate control vacuum system. Heater valve.
Manual gearbox (very rare, significant premium), Both tops present and matching, Air conditioning (most have), ABS (late cars), Rear seats, Full leather, European specification, Documented service history, Rust-free example
