Subaru Impreza Buyer's Guide

Four tracked Impreza sales, £2,452 to £43,472, median £5,142, with eight more live as we write: strong inventory for a car with this much unfinished business in its values. The £43,472 top result was a special edition and is an outlier; the working market lives in the four figures, where most Imprezas are still priced as the used performance cars they have been for twenty years.

What to pay

£2,452 to £5,142, floor to median, buys the majority position: driven, usually modified cars priced as used cars, where the receipts folder is the only document that matters. Above the median the market begins paying for what it cannot easily find: standard, unmodified examples with continuous history, the scarce commodity in a model line where nearly everything was mapped, decatted or crashed. The £43,472 ceiling is special-edition money and should be read as the exception, not the trajectory. Eight live lots gives buyers rare leverage: view several, buy the most original.

What goes wrong

Rust in the rear arches is the established structural fault, and it spreads from the inner lip outward, so a bubbled arch is further gone than it looks. Mechanically the flat-four is strong when serviced and fragile when tuned carelessly; the risk profile of any individual car is set by its previous owners rather than by Fuji Heavy Industries. Evidence of regular oil changes and standard boost outranks every cosmetic virtue. Parts supply remains good, though body panels for the earliest cars are thinning.

Our view

Buy standard or do not bother: the modified majority will always be priced as used cars, while unmodified examples are the ones the market will eventually chase. A stock, documented car above our median is the position to take, arches inspected first. The special editions have already made their move; the honest standard cars are still making theirs.
