About the E-Type Series III
The E-Type Series III (1971-1975) introduced the magnificent 5.3-litre V12 producing 272hp. Wider track, flared arches, and ventilated disc brakes. Available as Roadster and 2+2 only. Around 15,300 built. Values from £50k (2+2) to £150k+ (Roadster).
Known Issues to Watch For
Engine: XK six (S1/S2) - oil leaks, cooling critical, timing chain, head gasket if overheated. V12 (S3) - generally reliable but complex carburettors (some converted to EFI), overheating if coolant neglected, head gaskets expensive, distributor issues. Cooling: Critical on all E-Types - modern fans recommended. Gearbox: All-synchro from 1965. Earlier Moss box synchros wear. Brakes: Discs all round but inboard rears (S3) can seize. Servo issues. Body: Monocoque steel - rust in sills, floors, inner wings, bonnet frame, boot floor critical. Bonnet fit notoriously difficult. Electrics: Lucas issues. Budget £8-15k annually.
